Sink and cooktop on site is not a courtesy. Undermount sinks need the exact bowl size, the flange, and the faucet hole count. A farm sink needs the apron height and the reveal you want, proud, flush, or slightly recessed. Cooktops need the cutout from the maker, plus clearance to a wall or a raised bar. If you leave a cardboard box and a printout, we can work from that, but a printout that does not match the unit in the box is a common failure. Bring the real sink and the real cooktop. Seam and vein layout happens on the same visit or at the slab floor with photos from the template. Natural stone does not come in infinite length. A long L or a large island usually needs a seam. Digital templating is accurate when the room is ready and wrong when it is not. If cabinets are still being adjusted, the file will lock a shape that will change. If a wall is not finished, a later layer of tile or a thicker backsplash can leave a gap at the stone. If you plan a full height backsplash from the same slab, we need that decision on template day so we reserve the extra material. Holding extra slab for splash is a tradeoff. You use more of the lot. You also lock that lot so it cannot go to someone else. There is no way to template a moving target.
Seams are the honest downside on most larger kitchens. A single slab run looks clean. Many kitchens are longer than one slab. We can often put a seam at a corner or at a change of direction. We cannot make a seam in the middle of a long straight island disappear. Color matched epoxy helps. It does not erase the joint. Granite is generally hard and heat tolerant but porous enough to want sealing. Quartz needs no sealing and is non porous, but can be damaged by direct heat and by long UV outdoors. Marble etches from lemon and vinegar regardless of sealing. Quartzite is very hard, though some slabs sold as quartzite are softer and behave more like marble.
Another tradeoff is time versus readiness. People want stone on the cabinets as soon as the boxes are set. If the sink is still on a truck or the cooktop model is still being chosen, templating early creates recut risk. Recutting a sink hole that is already polished is ugly work and can scrap a piece. Deciding seams and veins is a field decision, not a catalog decision. Stand at the cabinets with the crew. Look at how light hits the run. If you picked a busy granite or a quartzite with a strong diagonal, you generally want the movement to travel along the main stretch, not to crash into a sink. If you picked a quieter quartz, seam location matters more for structure than for pattern. Book matching two slabs looks continuous only if both slabs came from the same block and were cut in sequence. Not every lot on the Austin floor is a book match pair. Ask before you commit to a single face.
Overhangs, radius corners, and raised bars all get locked on template day. A standard overhang past the cabinet door is common. A seating overhang on an island needs support. We will tell you if the span wants steel or corbels. That is not optional if the stone is marble or a softer slab sold as quartzite. Porcelain slabs can be thin and need a different support plan than three centimeter granite. Soapstone is generally softer and will take dings. Dolomite sits between marble and quartzite in many cases and can etch. Decide the edge profile before we leave. Changing an edge after the shop has started is a new fabrication pass.
How you decide to proceed is whether the cabinets are truly ready and whether you accept the seam map.
